About Bircher Lane

Something good, close to home. Bircher Lane is built around a belief that the things we live with every day are worth caring about. The food we eat. The places we call home. The things we choose to make ourselves, and the things we choose to bring home from someone else. Around here, that means growing things in the garden, picking fruit when it’s in season, seeking out food made by people who care about it, and spending far too much time learning how to make a really good loaf of bread. Not because every day needs to be an occasion, but because these are the things that make up a life. Modern life doesn’t always make room for those things. Most of us don’t have three days to make sourdough or an afternoon to spend seeking out everything we’d like to put on our tables. Bircher Lane grew from wanting to make that a little easier. From our home in Kansas City, naturally leavened sourdough and small-batch baked goods are made with the time and attention they deserve, so bringing something really good into your home can be the easy part.

For over twenty years, I built my career in retail and the corporate world. I loved the challenge of the work: the constant problem solving, the pace, the opportunity to build something better. But what kept me invested for so long was always the people.

I loved knowing my customers. I loved taking care of my teams. And I loved the very human exchange of understanding what someone needed and finding a way to make their experience a little better.

As my career evolved, I found myself getting farther away from that. I began thinking seriously about what it might look like to take everything I had learned over those years and put it toward something of my own. Something where the work felt personal again, and where I could know the people I was doing it for.

Baking had always occupied a very different part of my life. I loved picking fruit in season, bringing home something from a local farm, trying a recipe I’d never made before, and then finding someone to share it with. There was something deeply satisfying about making something with my own hands and watching someone else enjoy it.

Sourdough came later. I was fascinated by how much there was to learn and humbled by how difficult it could be. It required patience, attention, and eventually the confidence to trust my own hands. I kept at it because I wanted to understand it. Somewhere along the way, it became the thing I most wanted to make for other people.

Bircher Lane brings me back to something I had been missing for a long time: work that feels personal. I get to care deeply about what I make, know the people I’m making it for, and see it become a small part of their lives.
